    Festival Tips & Safety.

Hard-won knowledge from years on the global festival circuit — from Byron Bay to Black Rock Desert, from Boom to your backyard bush doof.

    The Wet Scarf Cooling System
Heat Management · Essential at Hot Festivals

Soak a large thin scarf in water — or better yet, dip it in an esky of ice — then drape it over your head and down your back. The wind passes through the wet organic cotton creating a natural evaporative cooling effect, dropping your body temperature and keeping you on the dancefloor far longer.

The Boom Scarf is our most popular for exactly this reason: large enough to cover your head and full back, lightweight enough to carry all day. Stroll to the lake, dip it, come back to the dancefloor refreshed. Repeat.

Electrolytes: Don’t Wait Until You’re Thirsty
    Hydration · Heat Safety

Dehydration is one of the most common reasons people end up in the medical tent — especially at Boom where temperatures regularly reach 40°C+, and at Australian summer festivals where direct sun, dancing, and limited shade combine dangerously.

Start every day with electrolytes before you feel thirsty. By the time thirst kicks in, you’re already dehydrated. Keep sachets in your belt bag. A banana or coconut water at lunch does double duty.

    Protect Your Hearing
    Hearing Safety · Long-Term Health

Festival hearing damage is cumulative and permanent. Sound levels at festival stages routinely exceed 100–115dB — enough to cause permanent damage within minutes. Tinnitus after a festival is a warning sign, not a normal side effect.

High-fidelity earplugs like EarPeace, Eargasm, or Loop Experience reduce all frequencies evenly — you actually hear the music more clearly. Sound engineers use them. You should too.

    Sun Safety Every Day
    UV Protection · Daily Ritual

Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen before you leave your tent and reapply every two hours. UV damage accumulates invisibly during a festival — you often don’t feel it until the evening, by which time the damage is done.

A lightweight wide-brim hat or the Boom Scarf draped over your head covers head, neck and shoulders simultaneously — the most effective sun protection that also doubles as your cooling system when dipped in water.

    The Sunrise Set Rule
    Pacing · Festival Longevity

At multi-day festivals, the sunrise set on day two or three is often the most magical moment of the entire event. Getting there requires pacing yourself — eat real food, sleep when you can, hydrate constantly.

Bring a warm layer specifically for sunrise. Temperatures drop sharply before dawn even in summer. A hoodie scarf or shawl you can grab from your tent as you head out is the difference between a beautiful experience and a miserable cold one.

    Camp Smart, Dance More
    Camp Setup · Comfort

Set up camp before exploring. Know where the toilets, medical tent, water stations, and main stage are relative to each other before your first night. Walk the site in daylight.

Leave a glow stick or coloured flag at your tent so you can find it from a distance after dark. Every experienced festival-goer has spent 45 minutes walking in circles at 4am looking for their camp.

    Look After Yourself
    and Your Mates.

The best festival communities look after each other. That means checking in, speaking up, and knowing when to step in — not as a buzzkill, but because you genuinely care about the people you’re with making it home happy and healthy.

The music, the stars, the dancing, the campfire conversations, the strangers who become your people — none of it needs a substance to be extraordinary. The festival itself is the high. Everything else is optional.

    Hydration Check-Ins
    Make It a Group Habit

Make it normal in your group to ask “when did you last drink water?” at least once an hour during hot sessions. A simple check-in from a friend has saved more festivals — and more lives — than any other habit.

    Know the Signs
    Act Immediately

If someone in your group is confused, very pale, has stopped sweating in the heat, is breathing fast, or is difficult to wake: go straight to first aid. Don’t wait. Signs of heat stroke, severe dehydration, or substance distress escalate fast.

    First Aid: Don’t Hesitate
    Zero Delay

If there is even a suspicion of dehydration, alcohol poisoning, or substance distress: go straight to first aid. Festival medical teams are there without judgement — getting help quickly is always the right call.

    Healthy Boundaries
    It’s Cool to Care

“Hey, let’s get some water and food” is a powerful, kind intervention. It’s completely fine — a sign of genuine love — to tell a friend they’ve had enough. Real festival community means looking out for each other.

    Don’t Mix
    Harm Reduction

Mixing alcohol with depressants like sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication, or opioids dramatically increases risk. Mixing different types of alcohol speeds up intoxication. If you’re drinking: one type, pace yourself, water between every drink.

    Your Wellbeing Matters
    Pace Yourself

Multi-day festivals can be emotionally intense. Disrupted sleep, sensory overload, and social intensity are all real. It’s normal to need quiet time — leave the dancefloor, eat something, be still. The best experiences go to those who pace themselves.

The ultimate truth: the most euphoric, most connected, most life-changing festival experiences most people have ever had happened when they were fully present and fully themselves — under nothing but stars and sound and community. The festival is the high. The music will take you places no substance can reach. Choose yourself. Choose your mates. Choose to remember every moment.
